After a few minutes, she froze in her tracks, somebody, or something, was DEFINITELY following her. Every once in a while, she’d hear a footstep that wasn’t hers, and when she’d stopped, she’d also sensed that those other foot steps had stopped, also. She took a few more steps, then spun around. Nobody was there. She was positive that there was a stranger in the woods. She called out again, to no avail. If there was some-one in the woods, he or she chose to be silent. There wasn’t much to say about her history. She’d always been poor, her father had been poor, and her mother had been poor. All that she had for herself here was a shanty that she had patched up several years ago, by the side of the lake. How she came here is a different story, for another time.
